A dual diagnosis, sometimes referred to as a co-occurring condition or co-morbidity, is when two different conditions are diagnosed as occurring at the same time in the same person.
Mental health conditions and addictions frequently co-occur. A drug addict, for example, may also have depression.
Historically, dual diagnosis meant a sequential treatment. Generally, the addiction would be addressed before the co-occurring condition. Modern practice has, however, changed. Although a dual diagnosis is not a specific, single, diagnosis, there is a growing recognition that co-occurring conditions affect each other, and recovery from both is much more likely when treated together.

Do I have a dual diagnosis?
The only way to find out is to get a diagnosis from a medical professional. If a patent has a dual diagnosis each co-occurring condition needs to be diagnosed independently
What is dual diagnosis treatment?
There is no standard treatment for dual diagnosis, and it will depend on the conditions diagnosed. Ultimately, the conditions will be treated individually
Do I need to be an inpatient for dual diagnosis treatment?
Dual diagnosis does not necessarily mean treatment as an inpatient at a residential facility is necessary, but it does make it more likely.

Why is dual diagnosis treatment important?
There is a much better chance of a successful recovery with dual diagnosis treatment than with sequential or independent treatment options.
There are many possible connections between addictions and mental health conditions. The addiction might be the result of self-medication, the condition might have been caused by the addiction’s changes to the brain’s pathways, or both might be the result of a past trauma. Treating a single condition leaves the risk that the remaining condition triggers a relapse of the treated condition.
