While there are people and situations that cause anxiety disorders, there are other reasons you may develop an issue. Anxiety can be caused by an underlying health issue. The constant thinking and worrying about an ailment can lead you to anxiety as you overanalyze every aspect of your health. Anxiety symptoms are the first indicators of a medical illness. You doctor may suspect your anxiety has a medical cause. They may order tests to find the medical problem and then treat it.

Types of anxiety disorders

There are multiple types of anxiety disorders. Each has its own symptoms and signs. These anxiety disorders include:

Generalized anxiety disorder

Feeling excessive, unrealistic worry, and tension with little or no reason to warrant it.

Panic disorder

Feeling sudden, intense fear which brings on a panic attack. The panic attack may cause you to sweat, have chest pain, and a pounding heartbeat. Panic disorder sufferers feel like they are choking and cannot swallow or that they are having a heart attack.

Social anxiety disorder

Known as social phobia, social anxiety disorder occurs when a person feels overwhelming worry and self-consciousness about routine social situations. Sufferers obsessively worry about the judgment of others in everyday social situations and being embarrassed or ridiculed by other people.

Specific phobias

Sufferers feel an intense fear of an object or situation. Heights or flying are two examples of specific phobias. The fear of these objects or situations goes farther than what is appropriate. The fear may cause a person to avoid ordinary situations to prevent the phobias.

Agoraphobia

Agoraphobia is a strong fear of being in a place in which it seems hard to leave or get help in an emergency situation. A person may feel panic or anxious when sitting on an airplane, on public transportation, or standing in a crowd or line.

Separation anxiety

This occurs when a loved one leaves. It is often believed separation anxiety is most common in children, but people of all ages experience it. Sufferers feel anxious or fearful when a friend, family member, or loved one leaves their sight. Sufferers fear that something bad will occur to their loved one when they are away.

Selective mutism

Children are the main sufferers of selective mutism. Kids may speak normally at home or with family and friends, but in social situations such as school, they do not talk.

Medication-induced anxiety disorder

Anxiety disorders can be triggered by using medications, drugs, or going through withdrawal.
